Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue has entered the NBA’s health and safety protocols, the team announced on Friday, becoming the 10th head coach to enter protocols this season. Assistant Brian Shaw will be the acting head coach, starting with Friday’s game against the Raptors.
Lue, who is vaccinated, is the first coach, player or staff member of an NBA team from America to test positive for the COVID-19 while in Toronto, sources tell The Athletic. According to an NBA official, an American wanting to re-enter the country with a positive COVID-19 test must get permission from the American government. Otherwise, Lue, 44, must produce a negative test, or, proof from a doctor that he has recovered.
The news comes on the heels of 76ers coach Doc Rivers and Nuggets coach Michael Malone entering health and safety protocols on Thursday. Other coaches who are currently in protocols are Bulls coach Billy Donovan, Suns coach Monty Williams, Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Thunder coach Mark Daigneault.
Indiana’s Rick Carlisle, Sacramento’s Alvin Gentry and the Lakers’ Frank Vogel were the other three to be added to protocols this season, but they have all been cleared to continue coaching.
The Clippers head into Friday’s contest with an 18-17 record and sit in sixth place in the Western Conference.
