Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, 17, admitted she has incredible memories from the Australian Open as she is now hoping to make her main draw debut at Melbourne Park. Jimenez Kasintseva was just 14 when she won the Australian Open’s girls’ singles title.
On Tuesday, Jimenez Kasintseva returned to the Australian Open and beat Anastasia Zakharova 6-3 6-1 in her opener at the tournament. “I have incredible memories. I won the first Grand Slam I’d ever played as a junior here in Australia,” Jimenez Kasintseva told the Australian Open website.
“Actually I wasn’t even thinking about coming, so when I won I was very surprised at my age – I was 14. A dream for me is to again play on Rod Laver Arena. I’m still very proud of how I managed to win that tournament.”
Jimenez Kasintseva dreams of making the main draw
Jimenez Kasintseva lost the opening three sets against Zakharova but then claimed three consecutive breaks to overturn the deficit and win the opener. After winning the first set, Jimenez Kasintseva broke Zakharova twice to complete a straight-set win.
“I’m still a few matches away, so it would be a dream come true but I’m focused on my next match. But yeah, it would be amazing to play in the main draw,” Jimenez Kasintseva grinned. Jimenez Kasintseva admitted she is quite popular in Andorra.
“Whenever I go back to Andorra I feel like I’m having a little reset,” she said. “I am recognised back at home. A lot of people follow me and I get a lot of support from my country but people, even if they recognise me … it’s like a little village and I’m very lucky in this case because I’m not really annoyed by people but some do recognise me and they do congratulate me.” Jimenez Kasintseva plays Kamilla Rakhimova in her next Australian Open match.
