Swashbuckling former India captain and opener Virender Sehwag has been named the captain of the Indian Maharaj team in the upcoming edition of the Legends League Cricket T20 tournament to be played in Oman from January 20 onwards.
Virender Sehwag, who has led the Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL), apart from captaining India across all three formats, will have former India batter Mohammed Kaif as his deputy and Australia’s World Cup-winning former coach John Buchanan has been named as the coach of the India Maharaja, on Tuesday.
“I can’t wait to work closely with LLC T20 tournament. It’s loved to see all the superstars come together and fight for the inaugural title of the league. These players are retired but they are still very passionate about cricket. I am sure they will show their extra skills for their teams in the next 10 days,” LLC T20 Tournament Commissioner Ravi Shastri said.
Misbah Ul Haq To Lead The Asia Lions Team; Daren Sammy To Captain World Giants Team
Apart from Sehwag, his onetime opponent, Pakistan’s Misbah Ul Haq will captain the Asia Lions team which has a mix of the Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Afghanistani, and Bangladeshi cricketers who have retired from the game.
The top names include Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Hafiz, Umar Gul, Sanath Jayasuriya, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Chaminda Vaas, Habibul Bashar, and Asghar Afghan among others. Asia Lions have appointed Tillakaratne Dilshan as their vice-captain, while Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga will be their coach.
Two-time T20 World Cup-winning former West Indian captain Daren Sammy will lead the World Giants team. He will have former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori, Aussie pacer Brett Lee, stylish English batter Kevin Pietersen, South African spin ace Imran Tahir for the company in the Giants team.
South Africa’s fielding ace Jonty Rhodes will be the player cum mentor for the World Giants Team.
