MOBILE, Ala. – Marthe Degeorges won her singles debut but the New Orleans Privateers women’s tennis team was defeated 5-2 at the hands of the South Alabama Jaguars on Sunday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Jaguars wasted little time in gaining the early advantage. Their three doubles teams all won by 6-1 score lines to secure the opening point of the afternoon. That set the stage for singles where South Alabama won the first two matches to finish.
Victories at flight two and three earned the home side a 3-0 lead overall on the day with both matches finishing in straight sets. Shortly afterward, Degeorges got the Privateers on the board.
The true freshman defeated Otoha Aoki 6-3, 6-3. Aoki was 17-2 in dual matches last season and was the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. She was also a First Team all-conference selection in doubles.
Mar Gendra then got the Privateers’ second point on the board with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Lara van der Merwe.
The Jaguars then finished off the match in their favor with a win at flight one. Nikola Kohoutova took the first set 6-3 and prevailed in a tough tiebreaker in the second set at 9-7 to seal the victory for the Jaguars. To finish the day, South Alabama earned a three-set win at flight six.
FROM COACH KANGA
“I felt we played a solid South Alabama team and we competed well in some spots. The match was closer than the score indicates. We will keep working hard to get back to our winning ways. This is a talented team that returns most of our starters from last year’s championship squad.”
NEXT UP
The Privateers will play a doubleheader at Alcorn State on Jan. 28 with the first match starting at 10 a.m.
