LA CAÑADA – The showdown between the Mayfield and Flintridge Prep girls soccer teams Friday had the makings of a high-scoring, offensive-dominated battle.
The two programs had 77 goals scored between them this season.
In their matchup, though, they produced just one goal, which came the 60th minute as host Flintridge Prep defeated Mayfield, 1-0, in a Prep League game.

Scoring the lone goal was Wolves junior midfielder Sage Shurman, who leads the team with 12 goals.
“Nadya (Lamarr) hit it to me in the air and I jumped and headed it into the goal,” Shurman said. “It was a very emotional goal and we were all very excited, especially since most of our players were injured.
“A lot of our starters were injured, and to get this win against Mayfield and to get the goal was very exciting.”
With the win, Flintridge Prep (15-0-2, 8-0), which is ranked No. 3 in CIF-SS Division 3, extended one of the longest league winning streaks in CIF Southern Section history to 53 games.
The Wolves have the third longest streak behind, No. 1 Bonita (104) and No. 2 La Serna (61).
Flintridge Prep and Mayfield will meet again, in the last game of the regular season Saturday, Feb. 5, at Mayfield with the league title likely on the line.
Mayfield (11-2-1, 4-1), ranked No. 1 in Division, has a few league games to make up and needs to win those to have a shot at the league title.
“I expected it to be a high-scoring game,” said Flintridge Prep coach Esteban Chavez, who is in his 15th year. “Because we didn’t have a goalie, and the girl that stepped in, (Jiawen Wang), did an outstanding job.”
Wang, a sophomore who normally plays defense, found out Thursday she would be starting at goalkeeper.
“I just selected her yesterday and I told her why, and that ‘you’re a very confident woman and you’re very gritty,’ ” Chavez explained. “That’s why I wanted to put her in there.”
Wang’s father was on the sidelines during the game and encouraged her throughout the game. He said his daughter had played goalie only once, when she was 9 years old.
“I was definitely nervous before the game,” said Wang, who subbed for injured starter Ana Bozzi-Mackay.
“I didn’t really know what I was doing. I was definitely pumped with adrenaline on the first save.
“Emotions were running high before the game and we were all kind of nervous for this one. Because it’s Mayfield, and we were told they were on top of their game this year. Most of the credit goes to the team, especially the defense.”
Prep senior Kate Fuetterer, who normally plays forward, was moved to defense by Chavez, and she was busy the whole game keeping Mayfield’s forwards from getting good shots. That included Mayfield’s top scorer Sonya Smeritschnig, who has 13 goals this season.
“It was a tough game and there weren’t too many opportunities for either side,” Mayfield coach Lachlan Cameron said. “They had three dangerous balls in the box in a row, and they scored on the first one and we were lucky to get away with the other two.”
Neither team could get anything going in the first half as both defenses played a tight game.
Cameron was impressed by the play of junior Rhea Gerontides.
“I thought Rhea was absolutely outstanding,” Cameron said. “We’ve used her in various positions and she’s tenacious and fights and fights and actually has a calm head.”
