The 2021-22 NHL season passed the halfway point last week. It’s a good opportunity to predict which rumored trade candidates won’t be moved by the March 21 deadline.
Alexandar Georgiev, New York Rangers
Georgiev filled in well for Igor Shesterkin when the Rangers’ starting goalie missed 12 games to a lower-body injury and COVID-19. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli recently considered Georgiev to be an unnecessary luxury for the Rangers when other teams need goaltending help. However, he’s a better goaltending insurance policy for the Rangers as they jockey for first place in the Metropolitan Division.
Hampus Lindholm, Josh Manson and Rickard Rakell, Anaheim DucksTheir status as potential unrestricted free agents this summer saw them surface in the rumor mill from time to time this season. With the Ducks in the thick of the playoff chase in the Pacific Division, those three aren’t going anywhere unless their club tumbles out of contention by the trade deadline.
Jake DeBrusk, Boston Bruins
DeBrusk requested a trade over two months ago but a deal has yet to materialize. Part of the reason is the 25-year-old left winger has only 15 points in 37 games. He’s a restricted free agent so the Bruins aren’t under pressure to move him by deadline day. They can wait for the offseason for the right deal to come along.
Jakob Chychrun, Arizona Coyotes
Chychrun’s been all over the rumor mill for weeks. He’s a skillful young defenseman with four years left on his contract at an affordable annual cap hit of 4.65 million. However, the Coyotes reportedly seek at least a good young NHL player, a first-round pick and a top prospect. He’s more likely to be moved in the offseason when teams have more willingness to make big moves.
