RIO GRANDE VALLEY –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women’s soccer team learned on Monday that freshman Nadia Colon has been called up to join the Dominican Republic National Team for its upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches.
“We have always been supportive of players who get called up to represent their national team as it exemplifies the progress they are making in our program,” UTRGV head coach Glad Bugariu said. “Nadia has performed very well with not only UTRGV, but with the Under 20 Dominican Republic team, so getting called up to the senior national team was only a matter of time. She will continue to play at the highest standard and continue to grow as a player.”
Colon becomes the program’s fourth player to receive a national team call up after Kinga Szemik (2016-19) was called up by Poland, Diandra Aliaga (2015-18) was called up by Puerto Rico, and Mari Liis Lillemae (2020-21) was called up by Estonia.
Colon played in all 20 matches for the Vaqueros this past season while making 12 starts and recording a pair of assists. Colon played in 17 matches while making eight starts for the Vaqueros last spring in her first season with the program.
The Dominican Republic will play a qualifying match on Wednesday against Grenada in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and will play the Cayman Islands on Saturday.
