MADISON, Wis. – The third-ranked University of Georgia women’s tennis team fell in heartbreaking fashion to No. 7 Virginia 4-3 Sunday afternoon, in the consolation draw of the 2022 ITA Women’s Indoor National Championship.
In double, Virginia (8-1) swept Georgia (3-2), winning on courts one and two. The freshman tandem Mell Reasco and Dasha Vidmanova and the experienced duo of graduate Morgan Coppoc and junior Ania Hertel both fell 5-7 in momentum-swinging matches.
After falling behind early in singles, the Bulldogs got wins from No. 46 Meg Kowalski, No. 95 Hertel and Vidmanova to tie things up at three apiece. Kowalski earned UGA’s first point of the day, topping Hibachi Shaikh in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. She was quickly followed by Vidmanova who overpowered No. 54 Elaine Chervinsky 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. With the win, Vidmanova moved to 3-1, including 2-0 against ranked opponents in her short collegiate career. In a must-win situation, Hertel broke service and gave the Bulldogs the equalizer defeating Sara Ziodato, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. In the deciding match, No. 119 Coppoc dropped a heartbreaker in the third set to Sofia Munera, 7-5, 4-6, 4-6.
Junior Lea Ma and Reasco both went down in straight sets. Ma fell to No. 45 Emma Navarro 0-6, 1-6, while Reasco lost to No. 28 Natasha Subhash 3-6, 0-6.
“We left it all out there again today, battling until the last point,” said Georgia associate head coach Drake Bernstein. “We found ourselves in a 3-0 hole early and climbed all the way back, two games away from winning the match.”
“We feel that we’re continuing to improve in both singles and doubles. Our team has continued to come together and we are building an identity together. Honestly, we feel like we’re on the doorstep of good things to come, but know they will come at the price of hard work over the next few weeks. We’re looking forward to moving into outdoor season and continuing to grow.”
Georgia will return to action, when they play host to the Ole Miss Rebels in the SEC opener on March 4 at 3:00 p.m.
