North Carolina junior Kayla Smith birdied three of her final six holes to shoot a 1-over-par 73 in the first round of the Moon Golf Invitational Sunday in Melbourne, Fla.
Smith shared scoring honors for the Tar Heels on Sunday with sophomore Crista Izuzquiza, who also shot a 73.
Carolina is 11th in the 15-team field after a 10-over 298. Florida State has the lead after 18 holes at 2-under 286. Virginia is a stroke back and Florida and Louisville are tied for third at 3 over.
UNC freshman Stephany Kim shot 1-under on her back nine and finished with a 75. Junior Krista Junkkari opened with a 77 and sophomore Nicole Adam shot 7 over.
LSU’s Ingrid Lundblad leads after a 6-under-par 66.
Round two of the three-day tournament is Monday at the Suntree Country Club’s Classic Course.
The Moon Golf Invitational is Carolina’s first event of the spring semester.
