BENGALURU: Former Karnataka and India top-order batter Vanitha VR on Monday announced her retirement from all forms of cricket. The 31-year-old, who moved to Bengal this season, cited recurring injuries for her decision.
Vanitha, who picked up the sport 19 years ago, made her debut for the country against Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam in 2014. She figured in six ODIs and 16 T20Is including the 2016 World T20 tournament.
Vanitha started her career for Karnataka as a teenager against Goa in the inter-state women’s one-day tournament in the 2006-07 season. In a decade-and-a-half, she featured in 96 List A matches and 102 T20 matches for the state, scoring 1,957 List A runs and 2,117 runs in T20s.
A player who wore her heart on her sleeve, Vanitha often got the stick from the national selectors for speaking her mind. At times inconsistency in her batting let her down.
Vanitha also has the distinction of scoring a double century in the KSCA league (93-ball-206).
“It was a tough decision to make, but I wanted to go out on my terms and when I’m still playing good cricket. Also, I’ve had recurring injuries and I don’t want to play when I’m not giving my 100%,” said Vanitha.
The Bengaluru cricketer scored 225 runs from six matches, including a century (107), in Bengal’s Women’s senior One-Day Trophy campaign which ended in the semifinals in November last year. Although her last appearance was for Bengal, she finished her career on home turf as the tournament was played in Bengaluru.
Looking ahead, Vanitha stated, “The next chapter of my life I would like to dedicate to grooming young talent. This is not the end but the beginning of a new challenge.”
