OU Heads to Arizona, Arizona State

NORMAN — The No. 16 Oklahoma men’s tennis team heads to Arizona to face No. 28 Arizona and Arizona State beginning Friday. The Sooners (11-2) will begin their trip in Tucson, Ariz., against the Wildcats (12-4) on Friday before traveling to Tempe, Ariz., to face the Sun Devils (3-7) on Sunday. 

MATCHDAY BASICS

First serve against Arizona is set for 3:30 p.m. CT on Friday. Sunday’s match against ASU is slated for 2 p.m. CT.

LAST TIME OUT

The Sooners wrapped their six-match homestand with a sweep over then-No. 18 Texas A&M and a hard-fought 4-3 loss over No. 4 Baylor. 

Against the then-No. 18 Aggies, OU earned its second top-25 win and fifth sweep on the season. 

The Sooners kicked things off, claiming the doubles point over the Aggies with victories on courts one and two. Alex Martinez and Welsh Hotard rolled through their match at the top spot against Stefan Storch and Noah Schachter. Baptiste Anselmo and Mark Mandlik clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win on court two against Pierce Rollins and Matthis Ross. 

Justin Schlageter continued the Sooners’ momentum, notching the first singles win on the night. The junior defeated Storch 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot. Hotard struck next for OU with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Giulio Perego on court six. 

Martinez clinched the match for the Sooners in a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 fashion over No. 50 Perot at the No. 2 spot. Martinez’s win was his third ranked win on the season. 

Play continued with OU picking up three more singles wins. No. 29 Beiler finished next for Oklahoma, defeating Schachter 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 [3] at the top line. On court five, No. 88 Mandlik tallied the win over Ross 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2 to put the Sooners up 6-0. No. 70 Jordan Hasson closed out the night for OU with a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory on court three.

The then-No. 20 Sooners took then-No. 4 Baylor to the wire but fell 4-3 at the Headington Family Tennis Center. 

OU opened the match in doubles with Beiler and Han striking first, tallying a 6-1 win against Tadeas Paroulek and Christopher Frantzen at the No. 3 spot.  Mandlik and  Anselmo clinched the point by a score of 7-6 (4) against No. 24 Matias Soto and Juampi Mazzuchi.

In singles competition No. 70  Hasson brought the heat for the Sooners and garnered a 6-2, 6-3 win on court three against Marko Miladinovic.

Baylor tied the match with wins on courts one and two, but the Sooners took back the lead as Hotard defeated No. 106 Paroulek, 6-3, 7-6 (5), at the No. 6 spot.

The Bears went on to tally wins on the remaining courts and clinched the match.
