LAHAINA — You’d never know from talking with Lahainaluna High School girls soccer coach Sky Delaney that the Lady Lunas had just completed a winless (0-10) Maui Interscholastic League season.
Instead, Coach Sky noted the team bonding and positive attitude they displayed throughout the season as the highlight for this group.
“Of course, COVID had a big effect on the team, and it was tough to cultivate the interest in the game from the club level to high school. But the future looks bright with assistant coaches Luxmi Quall and Jackie Ellis along with a hardworking group of players.”
Leading the way for the 2022 Lady Lunas were captains Galilea Rendon, a senior, junior Haley Mahoe, and sophomore Cecelia Steiner. Rounding out the roster were juniors Charisse Abut, Tiana Bryant, Karolynn Ingan, Ailyn Rendon and Mauriirani Niles Cantero; sophomores IIeana Bush, Mekayla Bandy and Kyleen Arroyo Haro; and first-year players Nelly Garcia Olea, Alexa Torres Perez, Alissa Skolnick, Mia Pinedo and Zhi Clark.
“Some of the kids said that this was the funnest time they’ve had playing soccer. It’s a rewarding feeling to know that they had the desire to be there, and that they had fun despite the lack of experience. Our captains (Rendon, Mahoe and Steiner) became anchors for the team and great leaders. And our keepers, Tiana and Maurii, showed a strong effort for us in goal. The girls really galvanized as a group and came together in the end,” added Coach Sky.
“Our thanks goes out to Athletic Directors Scott Soldwisch and Jon Conrad, Athletic Trainers Rebecca Cohen and Mike Griffo, as well as Stacy Bookland, Irene Tihada, Annie and James Hayes, and Dee Dee and Dave Rockett. We truly appreciate all the support.”
