DUE WEST, S.C. – LR women’s tennis continued its strong start to the season on Saturday, sweeping Erskine in a non-conference road match. The Bears have now won five straight matches after a third place finish in the Florence Invitational.
Gemma Southwick and Lucy Whelan were victorious at No. 2 doubles 6-3, and Sandy Mitsou and Evgeniya Pugina won at No. 3 doubles 6-2.
In singles, Southwich won a tough match at No. 1, 7-6, 7-6. Pugina was dominant at No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-1, and Alicia Wahlberg also won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Lucy Whelan was victorious at No. 4 singles 6-4, 3-6, 1-0, and Diana Babinets won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5. Rounding out the Bear win was Sandy Mitsou, who only dropped one game at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
The Bears are back in action again on Sunday when they resume conference play at home with UVA Wise coming to town. First serve is at 11 a.m.
