It appears Tomas Hertl is staying in San Jose.
The Sharks are finalizing an eight-year contract extension with their star center, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun and Chris Johnston reported Wednesday, citing sources.
Johnson followed up with details on the contract which reportedly holds an Average Annual Value (AAV) of $8 million. That AAV would place Hertl tied for 40th among all NHL players, and tied 14th among all centers in terms of average salary.
Hertl was drafted by the Sharks in 2012 with the 17th overall pick. He made his NHL debut the following season and has spent the last eight seasons in San Jose.
The 28-year-old was named to the NHL All-Star game in 2020 when Sharks teammate Logan Couture was sidelined with an injury. Hertl scored four goals in the Pacific Division’s 10-5 victory over the Central Division, making him the first Sharks player to score four goals in an All-Star game.
This season, Hertl has recorded 25 goals and 23 assists, good for 48 points. The Sharks are currently second-to-last in the Pacific Division with a 26-25 record.
This deal essentially doubles Hertl’s tenure with the Sharks.
