ATHENS, Ga. — The No. 11 Texas Women’s Golf team shot a 24-over-par 312 on Friday and are tied for 14th after the opening round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Graduate Brigitte Thibault led the way for the Longhorns after shooting a two-over-par 74 and finds herself in a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings.
In addition to the Longhorns (No. 11 in the latest Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll, released on March 25), the 15-team Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic field includes: No. 4 Wake Forest, No. 5 South Carolina, No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 Arkansas, No. 14 USC, No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 23 Ole Miss, College of Charleston, host Georgia, Georgia Southern, Houston, Louisville, Mercer and Mississippi State. Eight of the 15 teams participating are currently ranked among the nation’s top-25.
No. 4 Wake Forest and No. 19 Texas A&M find themselves in tie for first place in the team standings following the opening round. They both carded a five-over-par 293 on Friday and hold a one-stroke cushion over No. 9 Arkansas at six-over-par 294.
Alabama’s Polly Mack, USC’s Michaela Morard and Mississippi State’s Julia Lopez Ramirez are tied for first place in the individual standings after each fired a two-under-par 70 during the opening round.
The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic continues with 18 holes each on Saturday, March 26th and Sunday, March 27th. Texas will again be paired with Georgia for Saturday’s second round. Tee times will begin at 8:17 a.m. CT / 9:17 a.m. ET from hole 10.
The Lineup
- Graduate Brigitte Thibault shot a two-over-par 74 to put her in a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings. Thibault recorded three birdies (No. 2, par-4; No. 15, par-4; No. 17, par-5) during the opening round. Sitting at three-over par through her first 12 holes, Thibault rallied by going one-under-par on the last six holes to help put her at two-over-par for the tournament.
- Junior Sophie Guo carded a three-over-par 75 to stand in a tie for 26th place in the individual standings. Guo registered two birdies (No. 12, par-5; No. 15, par-4) on the day.
- Senior Sara Kouskova posted a nine-over-par 81 and is tied for 69th in the individual standings. Kouskova tallied one birdie (No. 5, par-4) during the first round.
- Sophomore Bentley Cotton and Sophomore Ashleigh Park each shot a 10-over-par 82 and are tied for 73rd in the individual standings. Cotton registered one birdie (No. 2, par-4), while Park also recorded one birdie (No. 11, par-4) on the day.
