FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off a two-week break, the FGCU women’s golf team opens postseason play as the 2022 ASUN Championship Tournament gets underway this Sunday through Tuesday, April 17-19, at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club (Par 72, 6213 Yards) in Valdosta, Ga.
The action will begin on Sunday with first round action beginning at 8:45 AM. Live scoring will be available through www.GolfStat.com.
No. 48 North Florida is the top ranked team in the field followed by No. 75 Kennesaw State. The Eagles enter the tournament at No. 129 overall.
FGCU finished third in last season’s championship match after the 2020 tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, the Eagles finished second in in 2019 which matched the previous high mark set in in 2016 and 2017.
Laura Edmonds leads the line-up after being named to the ASUN All-Conference First Team to become the first four-time all-conference pick in program history and the fifth in league history. She enters the tournament with a 73.12 scoring average through 26 rounds. The senior was also a first team pick in 2020 and earned second team honors in 2019 and 2021. She also leads the Eagles this season with a 457-123-16 record.
Just behind her will be Haley Yerxa who was selected to the ASUN All-Academic Team for the second straight season. Yerxa holds a 73.88 scoring average on the season with four top-10 finishes to her credit.
Three Eagles will make the ASUN Championship debut in freshmen Anouk Casty and Posie Farrelly and senior Josephine Bertelsen. Casty was named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team after ranking third on the team with a 75.91 scoring average through 23 rounds.
Madeline Marck-Sherk (2018), Megan Blonien (2017), and Fabienne Haremza (2011) are tied for the highest individual finish (second) in program history. Marck-Sherk shot 147 in an abbreviated two-round championship, while Blonien carded a 219 54-hole total. Kristin Swindell, who tied for fourth, has the lowest three-round championship score with 216 in 2013. Edmonds tied for fifth (229) in 2019 as the Eagles had three players in the top-10 to finish second overall.

Since taking over the program in 2011, Sarah Trew has guided the Eagles to 49 top-five finishes, including 37 over the past seven seasons. On top of that, she led the program to a pair of second-place finishes in the ASUN Championship in 2016, 2017, and 2019, signifying the best finishes in program history. She was named the ASUN Coach of the Year in 2015-16 and has guided FGCU to some of its best statistical seasons in program history.

FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 90 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 14+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just 10 seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 44 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women’s basketball (No. 20, 2021-22), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2022) and both men’s soccer (2018, 2019) and women’s soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors’ Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA’s Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 25 consecutive semesters. The past five semesters (Fall 2019 – Fall 2021) each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA in each. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
