By Sean Jones: Canelo Alvarez says David Benavidez Jr. and Jermall Charlo need to meet in the ring and settle their differences rather than be having problems outside of the ring.
Canelo obviously hasn’t been following the news because Benavidez has been trying to get a fight against Jermall, but he’s had no success. There’s no interest from Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) in fighting Benavidez, and it’s easy to understand why.
Last Saturday night, the two-time WBC super-middleweight champion Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs) had words when they bumped into each other at the Errol Spence Jr vs. Yordenis Ugas fight at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
According to Benavidez, he shoved Charlo after he walked up on his father, Jose Sr, and started talking trash to him. Benavidez says Charlo then darted away and hid behind two security guards, and started talking mess to him.
“Jermall Charlo and David Benavidez need to fight in the ring, why outside the ring,” said Canelo Alvarez to ESPN. “It doesn’t make sense. They have some problems, fix it in the ring.”
“I saw an interview when I was in Mexico that he was going to come up to 168, and then he said, yeah, he would love a fight with me, but that’s all he said,” said David Benavidez to Everything Boxing about Jermall Charlo.
“He did an interview with somebody else and said he was going to knock me out. I thought, ‘This is the route we’re going. I thought it was going to happen after I fought Ronald Ellis,” said Benavidez about Jermall.
“That’s when I seen that he wasn’t trying to make that fight because he started saying a lot of odd things. He’s not fighting anybody under 25, and he’s not fighting anybody that’s not vaccinated. I turned 25 and I got vaccinated just for him so we can fight.
“That’s when I started talking s***. ‘Man, you’re making me waste my time. I’m talking s*** because I think this fight is going to happen and you don’t even want to fight. Now you’re talking all this other s***.’
“That’s when I seen him this past Saturday [at the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Yordenis Ugas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas]. I knew I was going to see him, but I knew it was going to be like that.
“He [Jermall] wasn’t supposed to be in the section that I was at the Cowboys Stadium. If something happens and fight happens, ‘that looks bad for our company, so we don’t want you guys to be next to each other because we don’t want you guys to do anything.’
“He went over to where my dad was sitting and he started talking s*** to my dad, yelling at my dad. I walked up to him and pushed him and said, ‘What are you going to do?’ Then he hopes behind two security guards and then he started getting tough and talking s***.
“He looked super drunk and couldn’t even stand,” said Benavidez about Charlo.
