ST. CLOUD — The Bemidji High School boys tennis team doubled its unbeaten start to the season on Thursday, sweeping Alexandria 7-0 and rallying 4-3 over St. Cloud Tech during a triangular in St. Cloud.
The highlight of the day belonged to the Lumberjacks’ John McNallan, who came back from a set down against Tech’s Jonah Atkinson at third singles — clinching the final and decisive team point in the last match of the day.
McNallan prevailed 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the winning match, and his teammates backed him up, as well. At fourth singles, Casey Rupp was a 6-2, 6-2 winner as BHS split the singles matches.
At second doubles, Aidan Larson and Jack McNallan paired to win 6-4, 6-2, and Reed Johnson and Seth Lindgren were 6-1, 6-3 victors at the third doubles spot.
In a rematch of last year’s Section 8AA championship, Bemidji had its way against Alexandria to start the day.
Matt Benhamou and Noah Johnson each won 6-1, 6-0 at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, while John McNallan and Rupp won 6-2, 6-0 at Nos. 3 and 4.
In doubles, Max Harris and Jacob Fuhrman won a 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 marathon at the top spot. Jack Larson and Jack McNallan paired for a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2, while Reed Johnson and Lindgren finished out the lineup with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Bemidji improves to 4-0 on the young season with Thursday’s sweep.
The Jacks will put their unbeaten streak on the line all next week with four home matches, starting with a triangular against Moorhead and Fergus Falls that begins at noon on Monday, April 25, at BHS.
