BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – University of Houston junior Marcus Wochner posted a 2-under 70 in the Final Round of the American Athletic Conference Championships to tie for second at the league’s postseason event for the second straight season at Southern Hills Plantation Club on Sunday afternoon.
A year ago, the first-year Cougar tied for second with a score of 208 as a member of Wichita State’s team. In 2022, he joined South Florida’s Run Youprayong in a tie for second at 11-under 205.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of even-par 288 Sunday on the 7,274-yard, par-72 layout and finished third in the final standings at 848. No. 43 SMU captured the team title with a score of 835, while No. 38 South Florida finished second at 844.
A native of Holte, Denmark, Wochner posted the Cougars’ low round of the day. He opened the day with 10 pars and a birdie on the par-3 third hole before returning to even-par with his lone bogey in the Final Round on No. 12.
Wochner rebounded with back-to-back birdies to close out the tournament and record the Cougars’ highest individual finish at The American Championships since Michael Perras earned medalist honors at the 2017 American Championships at Innisbrook Resort.
Making his debut at The American Championships, junior Austyn Reily tied for fifth at 7-under 209.
Senior Alexander Frances tied for 22nd at 218, while senior Braxton Watkins and redshirt freshman Jacob Borow tied for 28th at 220.
SMU’s Nathan Petronzio won the individual title at 13-under 203, while teammate Noah Goodwin finished fourth at 207.
This marked the Cougars’ first appearance at the American Athletic Conference Championships since 2019. The 2020 Championships was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Cougars were forced to miss the 2021 tournament due to protocols within their program.
