Nobody wants to see anyone get hurt.
So it’s comforting to know that the Palm Beach Police Department has stepped up enforcement of the rule prohibiting the use of golf carts on public streets.
More warnings are being given to violators who live, mostly, in the North End. And as the number of golf carts being driven has increased, so have the calls to police — though it has slightly leveled out recently — from people who were concerned about the safety of those in a particular vehicle.
The use of the carts has increased throughout the area since the COVID-19 pandemic began as people looked to entertain themselves.
But under Florida law, golf carts are prohibited on public roadways and streets, and the town has not designated any roadways for permitted golf cart use. To make matters worse, they are often driven by underage and unlicensed drivers who do not know the rules of the road.
Add to that mix the blind corners throughout the North End, the constant truck traffic, distracted drivers and the fact that people aren’t used to seeing them on the road — and, unfortunately, it may be a disaster waiting to happen.
Don’t think that it can’t happen here because it already has: An 83-year-old man died last June following a crash between a golf cart and a car near the Par 3 Golf Course.
Police officers should keep up their campaign to educate drivers of golf carts. Nobody wants to see anyone get hurt.
