LAS CRUCES – The state tennis tournament opens this week in Albuquerque with the individual tournaments on Wednesday and Thursday and team tournaments on Friday and Saturday.
The first round matches are Wednesday and the finals are on Thursday at the Jerry Cline Complex in Albuquerque.

Mayfield’s Elise Jay won the District 3-5A tournament title and was seeded No. 3 in the Class 5A girls singles tournament on Wednesday and Thursday. Jay received a bye and only needs one win to advance to the Class 5A quarterfinals. Centennial’s Erin Lee, Mayfield’s Payton Hand and Taylor Vau are also competing in the bracket.
In Class 5A boys, Centennial’s Mitchell Vogel, Las Cruces High’s Syan Pai and Organ Mountain’s Josh DeBaca all have first round matches. Mayfield’s duo of Damien Lescombes and Bryan Cruz , Las Cruces High’s Sebastian Ojeda and Jesus Arce and Organ Mountain’s Michael Taylor and James Jorgensen qualified for the doubles tournament.
In the Class 5A team bracket, Centennial was seeded No. 6 and will play No. 11 Carlsbad on Friday at the Jerry Cline Complex. The Centennial girls were seeded No. 9 and will also play Carlsbad in the first round.
The Mayfield girls were seeded No. 4 and will play either No. 5 Santa Fe or No. 12 Alamogordo in the quarterfinals on Friday at the Jerry Cline Complex.
In Class A-4A boys, Santa Teresa was seeded No. 4 in the team tournament and will play either Hope Christian or Espanola Valley in the quarterfinals on Friday at Albuquerque Academy. Chaparral was seeded No. 10 and has a first-round match against St. Michael’s on Friday at Sierra Vista. In Class A-4A girls, Santa Teresa is seeded No. 4 and will play the winner of the Artesia/St. Pius match.
