ST. GEORGE — Four of Region 10’s boys tennis teams played a round-robin match at Desert Hills High School on Tuesday afternoon, as a final tune-up before this coming weekend’s region tournament.
Host team Desert Hills finished in first place overall, with the Thunder’s singles players going undefeated at 6-0 and its doubles teams going 4-2.
The other three teams competing were Snow Canyon, Hurricane and Cedar. To facilitate the round-robin format, the athletes played abbreviated eight-game “pro sets” rather than full matches.
In singles, Desert Hills junior Logan White won all three of his games, while teammates Jackson Holman and Jaden Wittwer went 2-0 and 1-0, respectively.
In doubles action, Jeffrey Purcell and Trevin Day of Desert Hills went 2-1, as did Nate Wade and Deakon Lindquist of Desert Hills. Both of those pairs were defeated by the Snow Canyon duo of Bryce Jensen and Braden Koch.
Last week was the final week of Region 10’s regular season, with the seven teams finishing region play as follows:
- Crimson Cliffs, 6-0
- Desert Hills, 5-1
- Dixie, 4-2
- Snow Canyon, 3-3
- Cedar, 2-4
- Pine View, 1-5
- Hurricane, 0-6
Individual players and doubles teams will be competing for medals in this coming weekend’s Region 10 tournament, which starts at 9 a.m. Friday at the Tonaquint Tennis Center, 1851 S. Dixie Drive, St. George. However, unlike in previous years, the region tournament won’t determine the seedings for the 4A state tournament; instead, those are being calculated based on the RPI rankings maintained by the Utah High School Activities Association.
According to the UHSAA’s RPI page, three Region 10 singles players are currently ranked among the top five in 4A: Luke Jolley of Crimson Cliffs is second with an overall record of 16-2, Liam Duffin of Crimson Cliffs is third with a 13-3 record and Kaden Koch of Pine View is fourth at 26-4.
In 4A doubles, Snow Canyon’s Koch and Jensen are ranked No. 2 with an overall record of 12-1. The remaining six pairs among the top seven doubles teams are all from Northern Utah’s Region 11, with Green Canyon, Logan and Ridgeline occupying two spots each.
The 4A state tournament will be staged May 13-14 at Salt Lake City’s Liberty Park, where Crimson Cliffs will be looking to defend its state title. Although the brackets have not yet been filled in, the UHSAA page that tracks the state tournament can be found here.
