The Dallas Mavericks now find themselves down 0-2 in their clash against the Phoenix Suns. But it’s hard to pin the blame on Luka Doncic.
The Mavs wunderkind has averaged 40 points through the first two games of the series and appears to be option one, two, and three for Dallas’ offensive attack.
While his efforts haven’t led to wins on the board against the Suns, Doncic’ scoring has secured him a top spot in NBA history. With his 35-point outing in Game 2 against the Suns, Luka Doncic now stands alone with the highest points per game in playoff history at 33.5 per contest.

Before Wednesday night’s Suns-Mavs game, Doncic was just decimals away from Michael Jordan’s 33.45 points per game for his career. The two superstars are the only players to eclipse the 30-point mark for their careers. Next on the list are Allen Iverson (29.7), Kevin Durant (29.4), and Jerry West (29.1).
But of course, the sample size matters heavily in making any fair comparison. Luka Doncic is just in the midst of his third postseason run with the Mavs and has played in only 18 games total. Michael Jordan, on the other hand, is just one game shy of playing exactly 10 times more postseason contests as Doncic with 179 total games under his belt.
Luka Doncic has a long way to go before he can truly measure up to the other legends on the list. But if he can continue at his torrid pace with the Mavs for another decade, then the comparisons can feel a little more realistic.
