JASPER — Perry Central golf on Monday competed against stiff competition with Forest Park and Springs Valley. After the match, they felt challenged to know where they needed to be for success.
With Forest Park and Springs Valley winning sectionals and advancing to the regional round, Perry Central wanted to dial in on competing. Head coach Zeb Coultas described their preparation.
“Today, we played two teams that advanced to regionals last year at a course that hosts this year’s sectional in June,” Coultas said. “So the plan for this match was to go out and challenge ourselves to see where we are as a team.”
For how Perry Central looks to use this meet to improve, the Commodores rely on seniors such as Ben Berkhouse and Jace French. For example, according to Coultas, French’s ability to play composed and poised is influencing the team.
“Jace French is a kid who does not let many things get to him both on and off the course,” Coultas said. “He put a lot of pressure on him to do well in the season. As a result, he is building towards conference time.”
Outside of their seniors, Perry Central sees production from other golfers such as Aiden Taylor and Hunter Kellems. Coultas described their play as being very helpful and steady. Yet as a whole, Coultas believes Perry Central has not played to what they are capable of.
“The team has been steady this year with scoring,” Coultas said. “ But with more than halfway through the season, we have yet to play our best golf.”
