The Philadelphia 76ers struck gold in the 2020 NBA Draft when they selected Tyrese Maxey with the 21st overall pick. Just two seasons into his career, Maxey is one of the best players for a Sixers team looking to compete for a championship. He can exact revenge on the Miami Heat, one of the teams who passed on him in the draft, in the second round of the NBA playoffs.
After previously being considered one of the top players in the draft, Maxey slid down the draft all the way outside of the top 20. Maxey told Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports that he expected other teams, including the Heat, Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs, to take him before the Sixers did. His mindset through the process, which he learned to embrace from his agent, Rich Paul, was that the fit of the team matters the most in the draft.
“He used a phrase during the draft process: fit over pick,” Maxey told Yahoo Sports. “He explained that where you’re drafted at is more important than the number you’re drafted at. And I think that really helped me and my mindset. You want to be somewhere where you can play right away, a place where you’re in the right system, the right situation with the right type of guys. And Rich knowing me, he knew I liked to win. So I’m thankful to be in a place where I can be competitive and help a team win a championship right away.”
Maxey certainly fits well for the Sixers as one of their key offensive weapons. His blazing speed, slick handles and shooting make him an ideal supporting piece for Joel Embiid and James Harden. At just 21 years old, he can blossom into a true star with the Sixers.
