Duluth Denfeld edged Grand Rapids 4-3 in a Section 7AA first-round boys tennis match at Laura MacArthur Elementary School, setting up a quarterfinal showdown with Duluth East.
Three of the four singles matches went three sets. Rapids’ Blayne Mortenson won the closest match of the day, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles against Adler Wormuth, but the Hunters won the other three singles matches. Skyler Fossum was a 6-0, 7-5 winner at No. 1, while John Bloomquist won 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 and Mathias MacMillan prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 4.
The team of Shane Redenbaugh and Lukas Mayne collected the Hunters’ fourth point, winning 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1.
Denfeld, seeded ninth, will meet the top-seeded Greyhounds on Tuesday at the Longview courts.
Rock Ridge 6, Hermantown 1
The Wolverines prevailed for a Section 7AA team title as the top seed on Thursday in Hibbing.
After blanking fifth-seeded Cloquet 7-0 in the semifinals, Rock Ridge took a 6-1 decision over Hermantown in the championship match.
Hermantown edged Hibbing 4-3 for the other spot in the final.
Senior Trent Mayer shot a 4-over 75 to lead Northwestern to the Heart O’North Conference championship on a wet day at Turtleback Golf Course in Rice Lake.
Mayer was the medalist by four shots over teammate Bryce Priem and Keegan Steckel of Ladysmith, who both shot 79.
Northwestern compiled a team score of 322, 18 shots better than runners-up Hayward.
This is Northwestern’s fifth consecutive conference league and tournament title.
Cloquet 7, North Branch 2
Brynn Martin knocked in three runs for the Lumberjacks in the Section 7AAA matchup. Martin was 2-for-4 with a triple.
Dana Jones and Carly Johnson also had two-hit games.
Allie Jones allowed two earned runs on nine hits and struck out four in a complete game for the Lumberjacks (11-5).
Hope Ernest threw a one-hitter over 4 1/3 innings, while Katie Carpenter and Livia Hoff both went 3-for-3 for the Mariners.
Proctor hurler Maddie Walsh blanked the Raiders on a single hit in a rematch of last season’s Section 7AA final. Payton Rodberg homered.
Grand Rapids 6, Proctor 3
Nolan Svatos allowed just three unearned runs on three Proctor hits in a six-inning outing. Garrett Drotts had a pair of hits, while Ren Morque successfully executed a suicide squeeze bunt.
Northwestern 9, Spooner 2
Luke Sedin allowed two runs on five hits in six innings and struck out seven, and drove in two runs for his own cause.
Jace Nelson and Kole Paulsen also had two-hit games.
