CHAUTAUQUA — A rain delay pushed back the start of the third round of the NJCAA Division III Golf Championship on Thursday.
It mattered little to Sandhills Community College.
Carson Witherspoon shot a 2-under 70 — one of five Flyers to shoot under 80 for the third straight day — to highlight the North Carolina school’s continued dominance on the Lake Course at Chautauqua Golf Club.
Tournament leader Andreas Huber shot a even-par 72 and holds a four-shot lead over teammate Alex Martin and Damian Guerrero of the College of DuPage in pursuit of individual medalist honors heading into today’s final round.
The other rounds for Sandhills, whose three-day total of 881 is a whopping 61 shots in front of second-place College of DuPage, were Austin Wood and Adam Hathaway with 79 apiece.
Niagara County CC is in third place at 944, followed by Georgia Military College at 945, Minnesota State Tech at 991, Nassau CC at 1,001, Butler County CC at 1,010, County College of Morris at 1,029; Jefferson CC at 1,051, and host Jamestown CC at 1,103.
A total of 16 sub-80 rounds were turned in, including a 71 by Lurner Benton of Georgia Military College, which was the second-best effort of the day. Rounding out the top 10 individual three-round totals are Troy Loughry of Butler County CC 223; Austin Quillian and Benton of Georgia Military College, and Wood of Sandhills CC 225; Leo Camilloni of Niagara County CC 227; and Hathaway of Sandhills CC 228.
All four Jamestown CC golfers failed to break 80 on Thursday. Traden Gray shot a 90, Noah Adams and Kyle Smallback both shot 94, and Josh Brown carded a 99.
In the women’s championship, Scotty Foley of Sandhills CC shot a 79 — her second straight round under 80 — to open a commanding 18-shot lead over teammate Ava Ray.
Foley’s three-day total stands at 239 compared to Ray, whose 87 on Thursday pushed her tournament total to 257. Other women’s scores from yesterday were Julia Bazata of Oxford 89, Rory Smith of Adirondack CC 275, McCarthy Lang of Niagara County CC 96 and Kennedy Lang of Niagara County CC 92.
NOTES: The men’s final round today begins at 9 a.m. on both the first and the 10th tees. The women tee off on No. 1, beginning at 10:40 a.m.
