By Sam Volz: Canelo Alvarez told the media on Friday that Gennady Golovkin is a fake person that acts the role of a good guy but in reality, he’s an“a**hole.”
Golovkin’s personality is why Canelo says he dislikes him and wants to end his career on September 17th when they meet for their trilogy match at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo’s (57-2-2, 39 KOs) dislike of Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) is perhaps why he made him wait four years after their last fight in 2018 before finally giving him the trilogy match that he, boxing fans, and DAZN has been asking for.
“He’s two different people. He pretends to be a nice guy, but he’s not. He’s an a**hole, that’s what he is,” said Canelo Alvarez about Golovkin being a chameleon.
“He pretends to be a nice guy. ‘I’m looking for the fans, I’m happy,’ but another place, he talks a lot of s***. It is what it is. Be a man and say what you say,” said Canelo in making it clear that he views Golovkin as two-faced, and a false, fake type of person.
Well, if Canelo defeats Golovkin on September 17th, he doesn’t need to worry about fighting him again because there won’t be any way he can campaign for a fourth clash because he’ll be viewed as a glutton for punishment, and will ignore him.
Whether Golovkin wins or loses the trilogy match with Canelo, he needs to start fighting quality opposition once again because he’s been taking it easy, fighting lesser fighters since 2018.
GGG probably would have forced the trilogy match a lot sooner if he’d fought better fighters, but he instead choose to avoid risks.
Golovkin’s opposition since 2019:
- Steve Rolls
- Kamil Szeremeta
- Ryota Murata
- Sergiy Derevyanchenko
That’s only four fights in the last four years for Golovkin, and the guys that he fought have left a lot to be desired.
GGG should have fought these guys since 2019
- Demetrius Andrade
- Jermall Charlo
- Janibek Alimkhanuly
- Jaime Munguia
- Chris Eubank Jr
- David Benavidez
- Jermell Charlo
- Erislandy Lara
- Sebastian Fundora
“I will do it, for sure,” said Canelo when asked if he wants to “finish the career” of Golovkin.
It’s quite possible that Canelo will send Golovkin into retirement with a loss, but that’ll depend on his contract with DAZN. If Golovkin has more fights on his contract with DAZN, he’ll continue his career, but it’s going to be a race to the bottom.
It’s unlikely he’ll face anyone well, and we’ll see a lot of the same type of mismatches that we’ve been seeing from him and fighters like Jermall Charlo.
