Battle at the Fairgrounds July 2
This Saturday, July 2nd, Gionta Management, LLC will host a night of professional and amateur boxing this Saturday, July 2nd, at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Washington, Pennsylvania.
The event, Battle at the Fairgrounds III, will feature local lightweight Matt “Sweet Child” Conway (20-3, 9 KOs) as he squares off against Brazilian Eduardo Pereira Dos Reis (24-8, 19 KOs), of Houston, in the six-round main event.
Conway returns to the ring after suffering a 10th-round TKO loss against Philly’s Avery Sparrow in Pittsburgh this past January.
“I’m beyond excited and ready to be back in the ring and front of a crowd. I’ve gotten stronger, a little wiser, and I’m taking everything I learned in my last fight and putting it into this one,” said Conway.
Pereira aka “La Dinamita,” has fought at a wide range of weights from 122 to 147 lbs, including fights with Gabe Flores Jr. and Pablo Cruz.
In the four-round co-feature, rising Pittsburgh female Mary Casamassa (1-0) will box former Pittsburgh native and current Las Vegas resident LeeAnn O’Malley-Still (1-2) in the junior middleweight division.
Casamassa, a fourth-year engineering student at the University of Pittsburgh and a former high school basketball standout, is excited and ready to continue to put her skills to the test.
Some obstacles have presented themselves to her as she is also diabetic.
“I’m very excited for the fight,” said Casamassa.
“I’m anxious to improve and gain more experience. The weight cut was certainly difficult at times, especially with diabetes. But, it makes it all the more satisfying when I make it.”
Her opponent, the 41-year-old O’Malley-Still, has gone the distance in all three of her fights and will look to get back in the win column in her former hometown.
“I’m grateful to come back home and compete in a sport that I know nothing about when I lived in Pittsburgh,” said O’Malley-Still.
“Boxing has become an integral part of my life since moving to Las Vegas.”
In the opening professional bout, fans will be treated to a six-round special attraction between Willie “The Thrill” Shaw (13-3, 9 KOs), of Oakland, California, who faces off against Philadelphia’s Tyrone Crawley (7-1-1) at 140 lb.
These two skilled fighters will give the local crowd something to watch.
“I’m excited to get back in the ring and remain active moving forward,” said Shaw.
Promoter Derek Gionta is excited to continue a steady schedule of boxing in the region.
“We’re excited to return to the Washington County Fairgrounds for the third time, said Gionta.”
“We have a nice trio of professional fights headlining the show, with Matt Conway looking to bounce back from his previous loss and regain some momentum.”
“Mary Casamassa steps into the pro ring for the second time in two months against a durable opponent in LeeAnn O’Malley-Still.”
“Willie Shaw and Tyrone Crawley is a very good matchup between two skilled boxers that I’m very excited for as well.”
The show will start at 6 pm with a number of amateur fights featuring boxers from the western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio regions.
