(July 5, 2022) Three-time defending champion and No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic rallied from two sets down to beat No. 10 seed Yannick Sinner 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 for his 26th straight match win at the All England Club to reach the semifinals.
“I always believed,that I could turn the match around,” said Djokovic
“Happiness, love, fulfilment, pride, [I feel] everything on this court,” said Djokovic in his post match on-court interview.
Asked about his Wimbledon win streak he said: “I love it. I think the majority of the players would agree this is the biggest tennis tournament in the history of our game, so this court is the most important one, definitely in my career and my life.
“This court inspired me to take the tennis racquet in my hand for the first time when I was five. Every single time I step on this court, the love affair keeps growing, so hopefully I can maintain that run.”
“He’s got plenty of time, it was unfortunate for him today but [he had] a very good tournament and I wish him the best of luck for the rest of the year,”noted the man from Serbia on his 20-year-old opponent.
Djokovic, seeking his 7th Wimbledon titles, is an amazing 37-10 in five-set matches, currently on an 8-match win streak for matched headed to a 5th set.
Djokovic will be playing Brit Cam Norrie who had a comeback of his own as well. Norrie bested David Goffin of Belgium 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in his quarterfinal on Tuesday to reach his first major semifinal of his career.
No resting for Norrie as he plays the 20-time major winner. “Just get ready for Novak in a couple days,” noted the 26-year-old.
“Just winning a match like this, I’m in shock. I don’t know what to say now,” Norrie said in his post match on-court interview. “But just straight flashbacks to all the hard work, all the preseasons and all the sacrifices I’ve had to make. So it definitely pays off and it feels pretty good.”
Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, the third seed, the highest seed left in the Ladies’ draw had to mount a comeback against Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 to get to her first major final four. It is a first for a Arab and North African woman.
“I was hoping that I could get to this stage for a long time already. I struggled few times in the quarterfinal,” Jabeur said during her news conference.
“I was talking a little bit to [Moroccan ATP former World No.22 and four-time major quarterfinalist] Hicham Arazi, and he told me, ‘Arabs always lose in the quarterfinals and we are sick of it. Please break this.’ I was, like, ‘I’ll try, my friend,. We were just texting, and he was really happy. He was, like, ‘Thank you for finally making the semifinal. Now you can really go and get the title.’”
In a battle between two Germans, mother of two Tatjana Maria defeated Jule Niemeier 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 to gain her first major semifinal berth. The world No. 103 had to rallied from a break down in the last two sets.
“It was a really tough match” said Maria. “It’s always tough to play against a German girl. I didn’t know her really well. We never even practiced together. So it was something completely new.”
