Bumble Bee Hollow Golf Center in Lower Paxton Township announced Monday that it will close Sept. 30 after being unable to work out an agreement on the land that it operates.
The center’s owners posted an announcement on its Facebook page this morning that said they “recently learned that a significant portion of the property was converted into a Conservation Easement. This designation prohibits the continued operation of the driving range.
“Despite our strong desire to continue, the Conservancy could not accommodate the minimum compromises necessary for operation,” it continued. “After exhausting all options for a workable solution, we regret to announce that this will be our final season.”
The center is located at 4201 Linglestown Road. AD DiSanto Limited Partnership, 5351 Jay Drive, Harrisburg, is listed as the ownership group. They did not return a call to PennLive seeking more information on the closure.
Customers were told to redeem all gift cards, lesson packages, and e-fob balances before the closing date. Golf club fittings are still being offered but will end before the business closes to allow time for special order clubs to arrive.
The first Bumble Bee Hollow, with driving range and miniature golf course, was founded near Mechanicsburg in July 1989 by golf pro Lorraine Garman Klippel and business partner Rhea R. Singsen, according to a story in The Patriot-News. Klippel was working at a course, the story said, but dreamed of a learning and practice facility because she had to sneak her students onto the greens between foursomes.
In 1996, the Bumble Bee Hollow on Linglestown Road opened. When a developer made Singsen and Klippel “an offer we couldn’t refuse” in 2008, that place closed and the one on Linglestown Road became the Bumble Bee Hollow headquarters.
The website describes the center as a full-service golf facility that includes a 300-yard double deck driving range with more than 50 stalls, a mini-golf course and a fully stocked pro shop. PGA/LPGA professionals are available for club fittings and lessons for all skill levels.
“As we reflect on the closing of the business, we would like to thank the employees, the PGA/LPGA professionals, and the many customers who have supported the business over the years,” the post said.
Anyone with questions is asked to contact the pro-shop staff or send an email to proshop@bumblebeehollow.com.
