WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – New Purdue Women’s Golf Coach Zack Byrd has made a splash in the transfer portal with Momo Sugiyama joining the Boilermakers for the 2022-23 season. A 2022 First Team All-Big West honoree as a freshman, Sugiyama transfers to Purdue after leading Hawaii to the first conference championship in school history.
“We are thrilled to add Momo to the Purdue Golf family,” said Byrd. “During her time at Hawaii, she has proven to be a strong player on the course while also excelling in the classroom. Momo’s drive to compete for conference and national championships shows that she fits right into our program and shares our vision. We can’t wait for her to join us in West Lafayette.”
Beginning her collegiate career in Hawaii, Sugiyama made an immediate impact for the Rainbow Wahine. The Gold Coast, Australia, native set four school records, including scoring average (73.4), total birdies (85) and rounds of par-or-better (13). Her three-round total of 211 (71-71-69) at the Fresno Classic, a runner-up performance individually, became the lowest 54-hole score in program history. Sugiyama finished in the Top 10 in eight of her 11 tournament appearances.
Leading the way, Sugiyama helped Hawaii capture four team titles throughout the 2021-22 campaign. Sugiyama and the Rainbow Wahine won the season-opening HPU Sharks Shootout before besting 16 other teams in the Coeur d’Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational. She secured medalist honors at the Coeur d’Alene Collegiate, finishing 1-under par over three days (73-71-68—212). Her school-record 211 (-5) led Hawaii to a win at the Fresno State Classic. Closing out the season, Sugiyama tied for sixth at the Big West Championships, doing her part as the Rainbow Wahine grabbed a share of the program’s first conference title.
Sugiyama and the rest of the Boilermakers will begin the 2022-23 season, the first under Byrd, in September. The complete schedule will be released in August.
