Manny Pacquiao Jr. has suggested his father only lost to Yordenis Ugas due to problems with his legs during training camp.
The amateur star, who recently won the WBA title for the unpaid code, airs his thoughts after winning his fourth bout of five.
Manny Pacquiao injury
“He’s had trouble with his legs. During this training camp, I saw it too cause I’ve been following him the whole time. I think that if he gets a good camp, of course, he can beat Ugás.”, he said, according to Marca in Spain.
After losing to Ugas in August 2021, Pacquiao focused on his run for the Philippines Presidency. He stated that he had no intention of returning.
“I did my best, but my best wasn’t good enough tonight,” Pacquiao said after the Ugas defeat. “No excuses.
“I wanted to fight for the title in the ring, and tonight the champion’s name is Ugas. I’ve done a lot for boxing, and boxing has done a lot for me.
“I look forward to spending time with my family and thinking about my future in boxing. But I want to thank all my fans that came to see me fight tonight.
“I want to thank all of you in the media for telling my story about what Manny Pacquiao has done in boxing.”
Serving the people in retirement
Pacquiao added: “I’m a fighter inside and outside the ring. I look forward to returning to the Philippines and serving the Filipino people as this pandemic continues to affect millions in the Philippines.
“Congratulations to Ugas and his team. Thank you to all of you. In the future, you may not see Manny Pacquiao again to fight in the ring.
“I don’t know, but for how many decades, I’m so happy for what I’ve done in boxing.
“I contribute a record in boxing and to (make it to the top of boxing), especially bring honor to my country, the Filipino people.”
Making it official a short time after, Pacquiao eventually lost his bid for the top job. Since then, he’s constantly linked with another fight.
Exhibition comeback
The eight-weight king does have an exhibition on the horizon. However, many fans still believe he could compete with the top guys at welterweight.
Before losing to Ugas, Freddie Roach did not indicate Pacquiao’s ailment. In fact, the legendary trainer was happy with his fighter’s work after he dropped a sparring partner to the canvas.
“I think [Pacquiao] putting one of his sparring partners on the canvas was a real motivator for all of us, and we want to continue that type of fight,” said Roach.
Pacquiao added that he still believed he was a young 42. So why not make a comeback at 43?
“I feel young. I’m 24 [not 42]. I’m just happy doing this. Boxing is my passion.
“I’m enjoying doing training camp and sacrificing, undergoing sacrifice and discipline, especially to prepare for a fight like this. I’m always happy.
“Sometimes, the coaching staff tries to stop me because I want to do more. They told me I might get overtrained. That’s what they say to me every day.”
Will there be one more chapter for Manny Pacquiao, potentially against Floyd Mayweather? Who knows?
