The competitive dance team from the Collage Performing Arts Center in Fredonia, the Majestic All-Star dance team, will be performing on stage at the NASCAR Cup Race at Watkins Glen International Speedway this Sunday.
“It’s a great opportunity for our dancers to be part of such a big event,” said Collage Performing Arts Center Artistic Director Marci Williams-Hadley. “When you come from a small town, to be able to perform at such a large event is such a great experience for them to have.”
The 30 members of the Majestic Dance Team are from all over Chautauqua County, including five different school districts. The team captain is Kara Vecchio.
Past dancers from the Performing Arts Center got the opportunity to perform at Bills stadium because Williams-Hadley, their coach, was a former Buffalo Jills Cheerleader. “That was great for them to get that chance, but my dancers haven’t had that opportunity in a while,” she said.
Williams-Hadley said that a representative from NASCAR reached out to her directly and the entire experience planning the trip has been a “world-class” experience.
“I was very excited that NASCAR reached out to us. They had been scouting some top dance teams in the area,” Williams-Hadley said. “You can just tell how big of a deal it is. Even the communication is so organized. You can tell it’s such a high-level event.”
After performing multiple routines throughout the prerace festivities on the Midway Main Stage between 11:30 a.m. and the start of the race at 3 p.m., the team will stay for the NASCAR race with tickets provided by NASCAR to the dancers and their families.
Williams-Hadley has planned for her dancers to sit together in matching t-shirts, but broken into small groups within the section, each representing a driver in the race. Williams-Hadley has a first place, second place and third place prize planned for the top finishing groups according to how their driver finishes in the race.
“I wanted to make the entire event something memorable for all of them,” Williams-Hadley said.
