Russell Domingo, Bangladesh’s Test and One-Day International (ODI) head coach, slammed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for making so much noise that he believes stops cricketers from progressing in the shortest format.
BCB recently dropped Domingo from the T20 squad after a string of poor results, including only two wins in 13 games following the ICC T20 World Cup, one of which was washed out, and instead delegated authority to newly-appointed T20 technical director Sridharan Sriram till the World Cup.
While BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus claimed that Domingo lacked aggression, BCB technical director Khaled Mahmud officially stated that Domingo’s attitude did not suit them in the shortest format.
“Everyone has an opinion, and it was disappointing that they shared it with others but did not share it with me. I have not read it yet, but people have informed me about it. But I am pleased with what I have accomplished with the T20 team and am not concerned about anything “ Domingo was quoted saying to a leading Bangladeshi Daily, Prothom Alo, on Wednesday.
“I will not say I was surprised (after being passed over), but as a coach, you have to be prepared for anything, and if the team is losing, you can not be sure of your future. I understand there are many questions regarding the team, and given that it (my withdrawal from T20s) was not entirely unexpected, “He stated.
‘Bangladesh players could not cope with the outside pressure’: Russell Domingo
Domingo claimed that he believed Bangladesh’s players were unable to handle the pressure from the outside world that had been building ever since the team lost the home series against Pakistan after the disastrous results of the previous ICC T20 World Cup.
“We were playing good T20 cricket, in my opinion. After that, in 2021, the World Cup guys were unable to handle outside pressure. We should have won against the West Indies and Sri Lanka in the main stage, but three world-class sides defeated us convincingly: Australia, England, and South Africa.” Russell Domingo said.
“After that, we lacked guts, and we were thrashed at home by Pakistan, and everything changed. The selectors changed the team while many new players came in while cricketers had a rest, and there was no continuity and the game spiraled out of hand “Russell Domingo stated.
Bangladesh has won only 19 of 46 T20Is under Domingo. Last year, they defeated Australia and New Zealand 4-1 and 3-2, respectively, but many feel the two triumphs were due to tailor-made roaring turners in Mirpur.
