‘It’s pretty big!’ RSA beat England at Home of Cricket
England put themselves in firm control of the second Test against South Africa after centuries by England skipper Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes left them with a commanding first-innings lead at the close of the second day of the second Test.
Stokes declared at 415-9, with South Africa trailing by 241 runs at the close after surviving a tricky nine-over spell before stumps. The tourists, who lead the three-match series 1-0, reached 23 without loss in their second innings with Sarel Erwee on 12 and Dean Elgar on 11 but they now face a real battle against England’s attack today.
Foakes’ first ton had come on his debut against Sri Lanka in Galle in November 2018 and he was delighted to grab his second against a South Africa attack that had ripped England apart in the first test at Lords. “It was a bit of relief. I was overjoyed getting a Test hundred. I’ve had a bit of a wait and I realised how hard they are to come by, so I think I celebrated this one a bit more,” he said.

England in control at lunch

LUNCH! South Africa 88-3 (36); R van der Dussen 14, K Petersen 20
Root with the final over before lunch. Inauspicious start as the first ball goes down leg, beats Foakes and runs away for FOUR byes.
Van Der Dussen happy to see out the remaining deliveries and get to lunch, which he does.
It’s England’s session though – three wickets for 65 runs and they’re in control of this Test match.

South Africa 84-3 (35); R van der Dussen 14, K Petersen 20
Petersen gets a leading edge as he tries to whip a straighter delivery to leg but it loops harmlessly into a gap in the off side. Promising for Leach.
Foakes then interested as a ball turns down the leg side and appeals for caught behind but even Leach doesn’t look bothered and the umpire certainly doesn’t.

Root continuing, so it’s double spin. He’s coming around the wicket to Van der Dussen who defends the first three balls. South Africa trying to get to lunch unscathed here.
Every England fielder is either up on the single or catching now in response to the dead bat but Van der Dussen punishes a poor ball pitched up outside off and clubs FOUR through the covers.

South Africa 80-3 (33); R van der Dussen 10, K Petersen 20
Root came on so that Jack Leach could switch ends. He’ll have a couple from the James Anderson end before lunch.
Leach getting a bit of turn but Petersen watching the ball well, playing with soft hands. He’s generally playing off the back foot. A maiden over.

South Africa 80-3 (32); R van der Dussen 10, K Petersen 20
South Africa trail by 191 runs by the way. It’s a long way back into this game for them.
That won’t hurt though – Joe Root into the attack and Petersen punches him down the ground for FOUR! That was a gentle full toss that would have been very welcome.
He then pushes one through the off side and they run two as Jonny Bairstow scampers round to field it to the roars of the crowd. A popular man at the moment! Single off the final delivery as well. That over relieved the pressure slightly

South Africa 73-3 (31); R van der Dussen 10, K Petersen 13
Single for Petersen off the first ball of the Broad over before one stays very low to Van der Dussen, who jams his bat down well.
Rest of the over then passes without incident. Probably four more overs before lunch.

South Africa 72-3 (30); R van der Dussen 10, K Petersen 12
Leach floating the ball in and getting some nice flight but not much to write home about from that over. A maiden to Van der Dussen.

South Africa 72-3 (29); R van der Dussen 10, K Petersen 12
A big EDGE off the first ball of Broad’s over and it races through the vacant third-slip region for FOUR runs for Van der Dussen. Probably wouldn’t have carried anyway.
He then defends one that kicks up a bit and takes his hand off the bat in pain following the shot. He looks in quite a bit of discomfort out there. England bring in a third slip (Ben Stokes) now, he’s quite wide and close.
An uncomfortable, hand-off-the-handle single to the midwicket region where Stokes was just moved from – nice by Rassie.

South Africa 67-3 (28); R van der Dussen 5, K Petersen 12
Right, Leach continues with slip and short leg still crowding the bat. Petersen goes extravagant from the fourth ball of the over, trying to slash a cut shot away, not great control but down towards the third man area and they take two. That’s it for the over
