Stars and Strides is a 501©3 organization that was started in 2012 with the goal of giving riders with disabilities a place to learn and become effective and competitive equestrians. The organization become a nonprofit in 2013. The stables are located outside Peaster, and the organization works with children and adults who have a variety of different disabilities, said David Miller, Stars and Strides cofounder.
(He started the organization with wife Teresa. He is the city administrator in Springtown.) The organization works with people’s cognitive, physical and emotional skills, all on the back of a horse.
“Over the last seven years, it has really blossomed and grown to where we now have two separate tee- off times, and pretty much fill all those tee-off times with participants,” Miller said, referring to the golf tourney. “It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year for the stables.”
The stables serve, not including vets, about 50 riders a week, and the center continues to grow.
“It is a great way to help support the riders and the programs that we do,” Miller said about the tourney. “Because not only does the golf tournament support our special needs riders, it also helps to support a program that we run now called Patriots Program, and that program is designed to work with veterans who struggle with PTSD or some other type of service-related injury and we have that program up and running and the money goes to help support that as well.”
People may contact Miller to get a tournament flier and sign up for the golf tourney by calling 817-713-0601.
