MIDLAND, Texas — Utah State men’s tennis senior David Cierny and sophomore Sergi Micó Fenollar continued play at the Midland Invite on Saturday, with Cierny advancing to the finals of the Second Round Backdraw of the event.
After bowing out of the main draw on Friday, Cierny responded with two straight-set victories. In the first round of the backdraw, Cierny defeated SMU’s Liam Krall, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Advancing to the second round, Cierny then dispatched Arizona’s Hiroki Sakagawa, 6-3, 6-1.
In the consolation bracket, Micó Fenollar saw his singles tournament come to a close in the second round, losing to Arizona’s Nick Lagaev, 6-4, 6-0.
Cierny’s backdraw finals match is scheduled for Sunday at 9:30 a.m. (MT) versus Oklahoma’s Mark Mandlik, the No. 91-ranked player in the preseason ITA rankings. The Aggie duo is also scheduled to resume doubles play on Sunday, as well.
