PREP SOCCER: Crusaders corner Coquille with rally – Medford News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News

    September 13, 2022No Comments

COQUILLE — The St. Mary’s girls soccer team shook off a lackluster first half and went into attack mode in the second where it took over and Emma Meyer’s go-ahead goal helped the Crusaders capture their first victory of the season, a 2-1 triumph over 3A/2A/1A District 4 foe Coquille on Monday.

After Coquille scored in the final minute of play of the opening half to take 1-0 lead, the Crusaders (1-3, 1-1 Dist. 4) came out of halftime looking to be more focused and aggressive, and it showed in their shot attempts, which went from a handful of first-half tries to double digits after the team’s halftime discussion.

The Crusaders’ Lucy Maxwell tied the score 1-all in the 49th minute on a through pass from midfielder Sadie Glaser.

“She had a good all-around game,” said Crusaders coach Martin Nelson of the senior Glaser. “She’s all over the place for us. This was the third game in a row where she was a real powerful presence for us.”

In the 67th minute, the junior Meyer put the Crusaders in front for good, hitting the back of the net after a set up from Isabella Mussio.

The loss dropped the Red Devils to 0-3 both overall and in District 4 play.

SUTHERLIN 7, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 0: At Sutherlin, Cascade Christian was unable to ward off high-powered Sutherlin, which seized the District 4 victory.

The Challengers (1-2, 1-1 SD4) were able to slow Sutherlin in the first half with ball control but in the second half the Bulldogs (2-0, 2-0), who have also not allowed a goal in their first two games, took command with five goals.

Challengers goalkeeper Josie Scaglione racked up 23 saves in what was a busy night between the posts.

ROGUE VALLEY ADVENTIST 4, NORTH VALLEY 3: Junior Issac Cheshire capped his hat trick with the game-winner for host Rogue Valley Adventist, which earned the win in its season opener against North Valley.

North Valley grabbed a 3-2 halftime lead but the the Red Tail Hawks (1-0, 1-0 Dist. 5) knotted the score at 3-all on Cheshire’s penalty kick about 10 minutes into the second half.

About 15 minutes later, off of a corner kick from David Zamudio, Cheshire collected the ball just outside of the box and slammed it past the Knights’ goalkeeper to give the Red Tail Hawks the lead for good.

Cheshire also tallied in the first half and Jordan Melugin scored RVA’s first goal on a pass from Zamudio.
