IRON MOUNTAIN –Iron Mountain captured the first set in seven of the eight matches Tuesday against Gladstone, but the Braves pulled back to eventually tie the host Mountaineers in girls tennis action.
All four of Iron Mountain’s victories came in straight sets. In singles, No. 2 Aziza Burgoon defeated Tia Schone 6-3, 7-5, No. 3 Natalia Brown rolled over Brooke Pendergraft 6-1, 6-0 and No. 4 singles Rediet Husing shut out Alexis Burch 6-0, 6-0.
The Mountaineer’s top doubles team, Elle Lofholm and Anja Kleiman knocked off Maggie Buckley and Montgomery Pepin 6-3, 7-5 for Iron Mountain’s other victory.
“Today proved to be another good test against a quality opponent,” Marcus Celello said. “Aziza Burgoon continued her stellar season, playing well against one of the best players she’s seen this year.
“We need to do a better job finishing when we have an opportunity, especially in the postseason when we are playing multiple matches in the same day. This will be a focus for us as we head down the homestretch of the season.”
WEST IRON 8,
IRONWOOD 0
IRON RIVER — The West Iron County girls tennis team swept the six matches played and was awarded two wins by forfeit as the Wykons (3-7-1) posted their second straight win with an 8-0 whitewash of Ironwood on Tuesday at the Nelson Field in Iron River.
West Iron’s top three doubles teams all won by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Callista Bortolameolli and Lillie Schmutzler triumphed at No. 1 doubles, Autumn Smith and Kaitlyn Smith recorded a win at No. 2 doubles and Bailey Hoffart and Aubrey Richardson posted the victory at No. 3 doubles.
“Ironwood has a very young inexperienced squad this season after graduating seven from last year’s team,” West Iron coach Joe Serbentas said. “Our doubles really did a nice job of concentrating on angles and put-aways at the net. Ground strokes were low and fast, making things difficult for their opponents today.
“Overall it was a nice team win, and we are starting to gain some momentum down the stretch with the tournaments around the corner,” Serbentas added.
