Athens, Ga. – Texas Men’s Tennis posted five ranked wins against players from USC, including four singles matches and one in doubles, along with one win against Georgia at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday.
The highlight of doubles play was an 8-6 win by juniors No. 16 Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper over No. 2 Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye of USC. The Trojans took the other two doubles matches with senior Chih Chi Huang and junior Micah Braswell falling to No. 36 Peter Makk and Lodewijk Weststrate, 8-2, and juniors Siem Woldeab and Eshan Talluri downed by Ryan Colby and Wojtek Marek, 8-5.
In singles, the Longhorns won four of six matches against USC with all four coming against ranked opponents. No. 35 Spizzirri took a straight-sets 6-4, 6-0 win over No. 44 Frye, while No. 98 Woldeab and junior Evin McDonald also won in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 6-4 for Woldeab over No. 41 Makk, and 6-2, 6-3 for McDonald against No. 113 Marek. The other win in that group was by senior Nevin Arimilli over No. 110 Ryan Colby, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Talluri provided the victory against Georgia with his second third-set superbreaker in as many days, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (7), versus Filipe Costa. Meanwhile, No. 16 Braswell took No. 1 Dostanic the distance before falling in three sets, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, as did Harper against #76 Lodewijk Westrate, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Texas will finish the tournament against players from Virginia on Sunday at 8 a.m. CT/9 a.m. ET, however the matches will be played on alternate courts with no live scoring or video available.
