Men’s Tennis splits matches versus Georgia at Southern Intercollegiates

Athens, Ga. – Texas Men’s Tennis split four doubles and eight singles matches against players from Georgia on the opening day of individual play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Friday in Athens, Ga.

The day began with doubles play as the Longhorns won two in convincing fashion, while falling just short in two tiebreakers. Senior Chih Chi Huang and junior Micah Braswell downed Teodor Giusca and Filipe Costa, 8-2, while senior Nevin Arimilli and junior Evin McDonald topped Thomas Paulsell and Miguel Perez Pena, 8-1. In the two tiebreakers, juniors Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper came up short against Ethan Quinn and Trent Bryde, 8-7 (5), as did juniors Siem Woldeab and Eshan Talluri against Blake Croyder and Britton Johnston, 8-7 (4).

In singles, Texas received wins from No. 16 Braswell over No. 73 Bryde, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2, No. 98 Woldeab versus No. 93 Giusca, 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-3, McDonald against Costa, 6-2, 7-5, and Talluri over Johnston in a third-set superbreaker, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (9). The other four matches went to Georgia with Quinn rallying in the second set for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over No. 35 Spizzirri, No. 117 Croyder downing Harper, 7-5, 6-1, Perez Peña topping Huang, 6-2, 6-7 (0), 6-3, and Paulsell defeating Arimilli, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2.

Texas will next face players from USC on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT/10 a.m. CT, followed by Virginia on Sunday at 8 a.m. CT/9 a.m. ET. Live scoring and video can be found at hookem.at/MTN-SIC-22-Live with Sunday’s matches played on the McWhorter Courts.
