VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – After 54 holes, Ole Miss ended its stroke play rounds tied for 8th place (-11) to head into the match play portion of SEC Match Play.
The Rebels started the front nine hot at 9-under but were unable to hold their momentum at the turn to end the day at 1-under. Overall, Ole Miss put up 62 birdies and went par for 152 holes.
“We really had it rolling through our first 12 holes today,” said head coach Chris Malloy. “Unfortunately, we struggled through a stretch of holes where you can really get momentum going in a good direction. We need to get better and learn to be a little tougher during those stretches. This group is doing a great job and is close to putting a very, very good round of golf together.”
“Now we get to switch our focus to match play and play a format that we don’t usually have a chance to play throughout the year.”
Cameron Tankersley led for the second tournament in a row for the Rebels. Tankersley started out his third round on a hot streak going bogey-free on the front nine while also making six birdies throughout the day. Tankersley ended the day at 4-under and finished stroke play tied for 12th place with a score of 203 (-7).
Hugo Townsend began his third round with steady play as he sank a pair of back-to-back birdies on the front nine while also going bogey-free for his first 11 holes. Townsend wrapped up stroke play at 1-over for the day and a 2-under score overall tied for 31st.
Tom Fischer ended stroke play tied for 41st with a score of 211 (+1) after going 4-over during his third round.
Sarut Vongchaisit made three birdies during his third round performance to conclude stroke play at 3-over. Jack Gnam maintained his best round of stroke play during the third round, shooting 1-over and going bogey-free through his first 11 holes. He wrapped up scoring for the Rebels at 5-over overall.
The Rebels now look to match play against SEC competitors. Vanderbilt and Tennessee came out on top during stroke play and will now face off against each other in match play. Ole Miss will compete in an East vs. West match play for its final round at Old Overton.
