By Brian Webber: Jose Benavidez Sr believes Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis will knock out Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in a rematch if the two fight again.
Benavidez Sr has his doubts that Tank (27-0, 25 KOs) will fight Pitbull Cruz again because he feels their contest last December had a conclusive outcome.
However, with Mayweather Promotions not showing interest in matching Tank against the other top fighters at 135, they’ll likely do a retread fight with Pitbull Cruz rather than putting him in with Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, or Vasyl Lomachenko.
Pitbull Cruz (24-2-1, 17 KOs) has won his last two fights since his loss to Tank Davis last December. Cruz stopped Yuriorkis Gamboa in five rounds last April, and then blew out Eduardo Ramirez in two rounds earlier this month on September 4th in Loss Angeles.
“There’s no way Tank Davis is going to give Pitbull a rematch,” said Jose Benavidez Sr to Fight Hub TV. “There’s no need for it. I think Gervonta won fair and square. I like Pitbull, but I think Gervonta will stop him in the next fight.
“It’s my opinion. He’s super smart. He’s getting better, better, and better. We seen what happened with Rolly. He’s just an animal. He’s a monster.
“Pitbull, everybody knows he comes forward throwing a lot of punches. That’s why they call him Pitbull. I think if he used his jab and a little more technique, he’d be a monster. He’d got to another level, I think.
“What I see of him, he wants to knock people out, and he comes with everything. Maybe that’s what makes Pitbull a good fighter. Maybe if he tries to use a jab, that’s not good for him. I don’t know.
“No,” said Benavidez Sr when asked if Pitbull Cruz beats Ryan Garcia. “A lot of respect for Pitbull, like I say. Ryan Garcia, tall and very smart. A lot of people criticize him because he stays out so much, but he’s successful. He’s good.
“He got dropped one time [by Luke Campbell], but he got up and won. But he’s learning from that nowadays and training with Joe Goosen. I think he’s looking a little bit better. Little by little and getting good experience. That guy is good. He’s super fast, and I think with every punch he throws, he does have a lot of power.
“That’s a fight of the year,” said Benavidez Sr about the Tank Davis vs. Ryan Garcia fight. “With that, I don’t know because it’s a good fight. To me, it’s 50-50. I go towards Davis a little bit because he has more experience and fought more people. But it’s a tough fight for both of them.
“Whoever wins that fight, no question. The best. Those three fighters are the best of the best,” said Benavidez Sr.
