Mount St. Mary’s returns to the pitch this week with a pair of MAAC road contests. The Mountaineers head to Saint Peter’s on Wednesday before traveling to Niagara for a Saturday afternoon matchup.
MOUNT UPDATE: Mount St. Mary’s battled Canisius to a scoreless draw this past Saturday on a windy and rainy afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium. Drew Camp made eight saves to post her second career shutout to pace the Mount in the game. Kalli Bell leads the team with four assists and six points this season. Madison Bee and Luisangely Navas are tied for the team lead with two goals each. In goal, Drew Camp is 1-2-4 on the year with a 1.08 goals against average and a .854 save percentage in seven starts.
ABOUT SAINT PETER’S: Saint Peter’s enters Wednesday’s game 3-9-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the MAAC. The Peacocks are coming off a 2-0 loss to Niagara on Saturday that saw the game delayed by the weather and played at two different venues. Saint Peter’s has scored just six goals this season with six different players tallying one goal each. Skyler Owens leads the team with three assists. In goal, Olivia Mackethan has started 11 games with a 2.26 goals against average and a .662 save percentage. Saint Peter’s owns wins over Iona (2-1) and Marist (1-0) in league play.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES WITH SAINT PETER’S: Mount St. Mary’s holds a 5-4-0 lead in the all-time series with Saint Peter’s that began in 1993. The last matchup between the two teams was a 4-1 Mountaineer victory at Saint Peter’s on Sept. 7, 2012. The Mount is 4-1-0 all-time on the road against the Peacocks and is 1-3-0 at home.
ABOUT NIAGARA: Niagara downed Saint Peter’s, 2-0, on Saturday to improve to 5-5-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the MAAC. The Purple Eagles are off until Saturday’s matchup with the Mountaineers. Niagara is led by Annie Ibey (4g, 3a, 11 pts) and Amanda Cripps (3g, 1a, 7 pts) while Felicia Grufman (7 GP, 1.27 GAA, .741 save pct.) and Agnes Stenlund (7 GP, 1.45 GAA, .680 save pct.) have split time in the goal. In addition to the win over Saint Peter’s, Niagara defeated Manhattan (3-0), tied Canisius (0-0) and lost to Quinnipiac (4-0) in league play.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES WITH NIAGARA: This will be the first-ever meeting between the Mount and Niagara.
FAMILIAR FOE: Mount St. Mary’s head coach Melissa Sherwood will be facing her former school on Wednesday in the matchup with Saint Peter’s. Sherwood, who is in her first season at the helm of the Mount program, was head coach at Saint Peter’s from 2016-19.
MAAC RANKINGS: Sophomore goalkeeper Drew Camp leads the MAAC in save percentage (.854) and saves per game (5.86) while ranking third in goals against average (1.08). Kalli Bell is tied for second in the league with four assists.
MOVING UP THE CHARTS: Senior Kalli Bell has recorded an assist in four of the past six games to take over the team lead with four assists on the year. Bell has also moved into second place on the Mount’s all-time assist list with 15 helpers in her career. The senior had a career-high eight assists last season, tied for the second most in a season in school history. Christy Wicks (1994-97) is the school’s all-time leader with 22.

PUTTING ONE IN THE WIN COLUMN: Mount St. Mary’s scored three times in the opening 28 minutes en route to a 3-0 win over Hampton at home on September 10 for the team’s first win of the year. The victory also served as the first win at the Mount for head coach Melissa Sherwood, who is in her first season with the program.
SPLIT DECISIONS: With the 0-0 draw with Canisius on Saturday, the Mountaineers tied for the sixth time this year, the most in a season in program history. The Mountaineers opened the season with back-to-back ties for the first time in school history with 1-1 ties against Western Carolina and Robert Morris. The Mount also owns a 1-1 draw with Radford, a scoreless tie with UNC Asheville, and a 2-2 draw with Marist. The Mount’s six ties this season are tied for the fourth-most in NCAA Division I. Three teams (VCU, Oakland and Penn) have seven ties this year while the Mount is among a group of 13 squads with six ties.
MAAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: It did not take the Mountaineers long to earn a weekly award in their new conference. Goalkeeper Arden Lembryk was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after making eight saves in the Mount’s 1-1 draw with Western Carolina in the season opener. Lembryk made a key stop in the closing seconds to preserve the tie.
WELCOME TO THE MAAC: In addition to having a new head coach, the Mount is also competing in a new conference this season. Mount St. Mary’s was announced as the 11th member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) on May 2 after a 33-year run in the Northeast Conference. The Mountaineers were picked ninth in the annual MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Quinnipiac was tabbed as the league favorite, followed by Niagara, Fairfield, Siena, Iona, Marist, Rider, Manhattan, the Mount, Canisius and Saint Peter’s.
HEAD COACH MELISSA SHERWOOD: Head coach Melissa Sherwood is in her first season at the helm of the Mount’s women’s soccer program. She earned her first win as the Mount’s head coach in a 3-0 victory over Hampton on September 10 at Waldron Family Stadium. Sherwood, hired in January, previously was the Associate Head Coach at Northwestern State, helping lead the Lady Demons to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005. Sherwood was the head coach at Saint Peter’s for four years (2016-19).
