10 days ago – when Naya turned 26 – Podoroska posted a special birthday message to her partner.
“Today I celebrate you from afar, but I feel you by my side every day of my life,” Podoroska wrote on Instagram. Podoroska, 25, recently spent 10 months sidelined. While Podoroska was sidelined between 2021 September and this year’s May, it was her family and Naya that helped her overcome the challenging period.
“From September to December I was able to be in Argentina with my parents. That affection and positive energy of being at home helped a lot. Then I went to Spain, I was fine because it seemed like it would be a short time before I could compete again.
When I knew it would be longer, my mum was able to visit me. Then my girlfriend came to see me. That’s how it started to happen,” Podoroska told Clay.
Podoroska, Naya, and Daria Kasatkina have come out this year
Podoroska and Naya were not the first cases of tennis players coming out as gay this year.
In July, top-ranked Russian female tennis player Kasatkina revealed that she was in a relationship with a girl. After Kasatkina came out, she was heaped with messages of support from tennis fans and fellow tennis players.
Russia isn’t really a place that is very open-minded to the LGBTQ+ community, but it helped Kasatkina that the tennis community gave her all the best possible support. Podoroska and Naya were probably inspired by Kasatkina as the Kasatkina case showed them they could come out and be accepted.
Meanwhile, Podoroska last played in Chennai last month, where she reached the semifinal before losing to Linda Fruhvirtova in the semifinal.
