Peter Wright was left not happy with his display to begin the European Championship despite producing a 103.4 average and 55% on the doubles to seal a 6-2 win against Ryan Meikle.
Post match, Wright urged Meikle to change aspects of his set-up after following his career from when ‘The Barber’ was coming up.
“I thought I played rubbish but obviously a 103 average, the game was better than that. Ryan is a very dangerous player, he’s still up and coming, he’s still learning. I keep telling him to change your flights or stems but he won’t, he’ll stay on the same old stuff. I’ve known him since he was 12-13 years old,” said Wright to Online Darts.
“Fair play to him, he’s still young and he’s still going to be here later on when I finish but hopefully he’ll change his darts or change his flights or stems so he can progress a little bit further.”
When asked about a comparison to tennis’ big three with Michael van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price compared to Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, ‘Snakebite’ joked and said he believes others are part of that conversation too.
“I’m useless at tennis, I’ll play on the football pitch. You can’t take out Luke Humphries, Josh Rock, Nathan Aspinall, them guys are playing fantastic darts so they’re probably more in form than the rest of us.”
