By Allan Fox: Terence Crawford feels there’s no reason why a fight against Errol Spence Jr still can’t happen after he defends against David Avanesyan on December 10th.
With Crawford’s massive eight-figure payday from BLK Prime, he’s getting to defend his WBO welterweight title against Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17 KOs) on pay-per-view at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska; he may be spoiled from that, thinking he’s going to get similar or greater money to face Spence.
What we’re likely to see is Crawford expecting to be given the same deal that BLK Prime gave him when it comes to trying to negotiate a fight with Spence. When that doesn’t happen, there won’t be a fight.
Crawford will then hope that BLK Prime will offer him another massive payday, but that’s unlikely to happen if they take a financial bath, losing tons of money for the Terence for the Avaneysan fight.
“There’s always life in the fight, but things have to be fair, and they have to be right,” said Terence Crawford to The Good Fight, when asked if there’s a possibility still of fighting Errol Spence.
“I feel if this is the fight they want to have and they want to please the fans and they want to make things right, of course, it can happen.
“You can’t become #1 in any division without having that lineal title,” said Crawford.
“There’s the lineal champion and then one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and on down. If you look at is, and that mug says vacant, you can’t call yourself #1 in the division because it’s vacant.
“That belt overrides all the other belts. Why do you think it’s free? You the people’s champ. We’re going to give you a free belt. You earned this. All the other belts, you’ve got to pay for.
“It’s all about money. We’re prizefighters. Let’s fight for this prize. I feel like I’m still at the top of my game, and I really wanted that Errol Spence fight just to prove a point. I really don’t need boxing.
“I’m getting a big lump sum at once, doing something that you love to do. People say, ‘He’s only fighting once a year.’ Well, I’m not hurting. If I was hurting, I’d have to take this; I’d have to take that. I’m comfortable, and I’m blessed.
“I just want to be in control of my own career, and have a seat at the table and be aware of what’s going on in my career. I’m able to do things that I wasn’t able to do at Top Rank. I’m able to see things that I wasn’t able to see at Top Rank,” said Crawford.
