The Mariners and D-backs pulled off a trade that sent 2020 American League Rookie of the Year Award winner Kyle Lewis to the D-backs in exchange for catcher/outfielder Cooper Hummel, the teams announced on Thursday.
Lewis, 27, was the 11th overall selection by Seattle in the 2016 MLB Draft, and he made his big league debut in 2019, appearing in 18 games while posting an .885 OPS with six home runs in 75 plate appearances. The center fielder followed that up with a Rookie of the Year campaign in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, hitting .262/.364/.437 with 11 homers in 242 plate appearances.
A series of right knee injuries, including a bone bruise in 2020 and a torn meniscus in ’21, has limited Lewis to just 54 games since then, over which he had a .667 OPS. Those injuries came after Lewis had a procedure to repair a torn right ACL during his first professional season in ’17.
Lewis was also sidelined due to a concussion last season, and after his return to Seattle’s lineup, he struggled and was sent to Triple-A Tacoma. In 42 games with Tacoma, he hit .245/.362/.517 with 12 homers.
Hummel, 27, made his MLB debut last season, hitting .176/.274/.307 with three homers and four steals in 66 games for Arizona. In 33 games for Triple-A Reno in 2022, he posted a .950 OPS with six homers.
