Gulf News takes a deep dive into how the Offical World Golf Ranking (OWGR) works.
The Official World Golf Ranking has been a topic of conversation especially since it was amended earlier this year in August. Any change in any system based on numbers, different players at different events all over the world is always a challenge for the golf fan to understand.
They were first introduced in 1986 to provide fairness and inclusion for players competing in concurrent tournaments all over the world.
We have tried to assist the readers to understand how it all works with a look at the rules and regulations:
– The system is run over a two-year rolling (104 week) period involving events.
– Ranking points are derived from each tournament’s Total Field Rating.
– Ranking Points are maintained at full value for a 13 week period to give credit for more recent form.
– Ranking Points are then reduced in equal decrements for the remaining 91 weeks of the two-year Ranking period.
– Each player is ranked according to their average points per tournament, calculated by dividing a player’s total points divided by the number of tournaments they have played over that 2-year period.
– There is a minimum divisor of 40.
– The Total Field Rating is then determined by the sum of player’s Individual Strokes Gained World Rating.
– Ranking Points are awarded to all players who make the cut and complete an event, subject to their finishing position in the tournament.
– Major Championships are rated separately and awarded 100 first-placed points.
– Then Players Championship is rated separately and awarded 80 first-placed points.
– Limited field tournaments are defined as events lower than 30 players.
The OWGR are always under regular review and it will be interesting to watch this space to see how they develop over the next few years.
